Merry Christmas everyone!

I'd like to know who cut the hair of the mom on "The Santa Clause."

Anyway, I'm currently in the middle of my Christmas, but wanted to take a moment to say howdy hi and write unsolicited tidbits about my life. As per usual.

The Dude and I, instead of buying each other Things, each planned activities for the other for Christmas. I planned a whole day for him, and he a night for me.

His day began with french toast, made with challah bread (CHALLAH! Challah back, y'all.) I learned a valuable lesson. Challah bread is a LOT more porous and fluffy than the kind of bread with which I usually make french toast. Soaking challah bread in egg and milk for thirty seconds on each side simply gives you "toast" that's "french" on the outside and soaked through with raw egg on the inside. Gross.

Anyway, I took him down to Braintree, the most disgustingly named town in Massachusetts, if not the country, and took him to F1 Boston, which is a go-kart racing facility. We suited up and watched a safety video, which included a lot of gratuitous scenes from Days of Thunder, the soundtrack to Top Gun and footage of guys getting out of the go-karts after an adrenaline-inducing race, all high-fiving each other in slow motion. It seems that the high-fives are an integral part of the racing experience.

We got in our karts with about 8 other guys and started our race. It was really fun even though I SUCK, apparently, at driving go-karts. I spun out at one point and had to be rescued. Shut up. Anyway, when the race was over we got the results printout and I was in dead last place, having driven 10 laps to the other guys 15 laps. Ken was in mostly dead last place, having driven 11 laps. It was really fun and he seemed to really enjoy it, which was the point.

Then I took him for an elagant, schwa-schwa luncheon at a KFC/Taco Bell combo. He had mentioned a few days earlier that he loves KFC and hadn't been to one in a really long time, and I'm quite the little slut for Taco Bell, so that was fun. AND belly-ache inducing! Yay for that.

So THEN we drove back into the city and went to the Frog Pond, which is the skating rink at the Boston Common. As we circled the rink to get to the entrance gate it occurred to me that I haven't been ice skating in over a decade, and wasn't very good at it then, either. Needless to say, both of us had sore arms the next day because I held on so tightly to him as we "skated" around the pond. Honestly, though, by the end of our time there I was actually getting pretty not horrible. I got to the point where I didn't have to hold on to one of his arms with both of mine, pulling down the entire time because I couldn't allow myself to fall down. I just "skated" with him holding his hand. I was pretty psyched, now I want to go again.

So then we walked to Dunks and got some hot cocoa, into which we put the mini-marshmallows I had brought, as I was deeply embroiled in the disillusion that Ken LOVES AND TREASURES mini-marshmallows (turns out he doesn't mind them but kind of thinks they're useless, as do I. I have no idea why I was so certain he loved mini-marshmallows. We ate 'em anyway.) We walked back through the Common and sat down on the path to watch four trombonists with Santa hats play Christmas tunes for a while. That was really nice.

Then we walked to Faneuil Hall, did a little walking through the cobblestones, ran into the awkward bitch from work and one of my more tolerable roommates (not together), did a little perusing through the selection at Victoria's Secret (apparently we were at the B-cup-only location which, if you've ever met me, you know is not really an option.) Then we had dinner at Cheers and made our way back home.

It was a great day.

For Ken's Christmas present to me, I got all dressed up (in heels that were far too advanced for me, to be completely honest) and he took me to Legal Seafoods, which is a pretty great restaurant. Then we took a cab to the Opera House where he surprised me with tickets to the Nutcracker. (!!!) I saw the Nutcracker when I was, like, 11, and have wanted to go every single year since then, and have never gotten the chance to do so. I was BEYOND stoked. He specifically picked that night because there was an a cappella group singing Christmas songs in the lobby before the show started, and he thoguht I'd want to see them because of my a cappella background. Aw! They were awesome, the show was nothing short of magical. Those ballerinas dressed up like fairies in those GORGEOUS glittery pink and yellow tutus... I felt like I was 6 and I had never seen anything so beautiful. I loved the whole thing.

Ken fell asleep. ;)

After the ballet we made our way to Finale, which is a very extravagant dessert restaurant, and shared a creme brulee. We sat next to a couple on what we agreed was their 3rd date (and going very well, I might add. Tonight, I think, was going to be "the" night.) Immediately after we stopped talking about them I noticed that they were talking about us. Probably because I said a little too loud "Shut up! YOU'RE a fish!"

Long story.

Apres dessert the plan was to take the horse and carriage ride from Gov't Center through the Common, but it was late and muy frio, and we decided to do that in May for our anniversary.

A wonderful, wonderful night. What a sweetie. Love that Ken.

So today is Christmas, I'm at my mom's house. We've had a fabulous day so far, and it's not over. I received much good loot from Santa, and gave some really good stuff to my mom as well. It's funny, the things I got this year were all centered toward home and hearth... a theme I would NOT have appreciated even last year, but this year it was absolutely perfect. I can tell my mom is really getting a kick out of me wanting things like her antique cast iron skillets and her mini-casserole dishes from Salmon Falls Stoneware. (I also got a couple of $50 gift certificates to Linen's & Things and Home Depot. Yay for frequent flier miles!)

We had a very leisurely morning, played with the horse a bit in the afternoon, and we're about to make dinner, then some Christmas cookies.

All in all, a wonderful holiday in which I have felt very loved and happy.

I take that love and happiness, turn it around and send it out to all of you who read this (and even those who don't).

Merry Christmas everyone! And/or a Happy Holiday-of-your-choice to those who do not celebrate Christmas. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Ho! Ho! Ho!
